Muhammad Yunus, founder of the Grameen Bank and winner of the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize, has frequently stated that poverty belongs in a museum. Yet today, extreme poverty, the inability to afford life's basic needs, is the daily reality of about 20 percent of the world’s people.

The Millennium Development Goals, which the United States approved at the 2000 Millennium Summit, along with all other UN member nations, are a slate of goals for 2015 in reducing poverty and improving the lives and health of the world's poor.
